Your quick travel guide to Seattle Airport

Tips when renting a car at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

      • Note that prices rise during peak travel times, such as winter ski season, summer vacation, large corporate conventions, community events like Seattle PrideFest and the Boeing Seafair Air Show, and major sporting events like MLS football (in the U.S., it’s called soccer) games, NFL football games, MLB baseball games, and NHL hockey games. Book early!
      • In Washington, you can drive with a valid driver’s license from your own country, so long as your stay remains under one year. With that said, you may also want to obtain an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) to keep alongside your license. Even if you have your IDP on hand, you will also need to present your actual license when asked for a valid driver’s license.
      • You will find many rental car offices at and around the airport, particularly at the Sea-Tac Rental Car Facility off International Boulevard. Shuttle vans are generally available from the main terminal to the Rental Car Facility.
      • While you can find many more rental car offices across Seattle and the Puget Sound region, make sure you know where you’re going if you plan to pick up a rental car farther away from the airport. If in doubt, you can save yourself time and peace of mind by picking it up at the airport.
      • Planning to drive out of state and/or use any toll roads? Ask your rental agency how they handle fees.
      • Pick the right car for your journey. Smaller cars will be more efficient on Seattle’s city streets, while SUVs or all-wheel-drive vehicles are more suitable for trips outside the metro region, especially if you’re planning road trips to rural areas like Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula.
      • Inspect the car and take photos at pickup and drop-off.
      • Seattle occasionally gets a bit of winter snow, but other areas can get much more—tire chains may be required when driving, especially in high mountain areas that tend to experience the most snowfall.

Why Rent a Car at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

Once off the plane (and past U.S. Customs), visitors will find designated passenger pick-up areas outside the Main Terminal for taxi and Uber/Lyft cars, shuttle vans to the Rental Car Facility, and the SeaTac/Airport Station for Sound Transit trains and buses.

Since the airport connects the I-5, I-405, and SR 509 freeways, you can store your luggage in the trunk and start driving wherever you want to go. It’s ideal for travellers with children, on a tight schedule, or planning to visit multiple destinations. While the Puget Sound metro region has made major improvements in mass transit access, you may have trouble travelling to other parts of Washington and the Pacific Northwest car-free. Having your own car lets you reach more places with ease.

Driving from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) – Getting Started

From the Rental Car Facility, you will likely want to take the SR 518 freeway west in order to catch SR 509 north to Downtown Seattle, or take SR 518 east to reach the I-5 and I-405 freeways. Depending on traffic, you should be able to reach Downtown Seattle in about 25-50 minutes, Bellevue in about 30-60 minutes, Bainbridge Island in about 1.5-2.5 hours, and 40-90 minutes to Tacoma.

In addition, International Boulevard (SR 99, also known as the Pacific Highway) runs right by the airport, making it easier to reach more of the Southside suburbs. Whichever route you take, budget yourself plenty of time to get there, as Seattle metro area traffic can get notoriously heavy at times.

      Common routes include:

      • Downtown Seattle – About 25-50 minutes via SR 518 west and SR 509 north
      • Bellevue – About 30-60 minutes via SR 518 east and I-405 north
      • Bainbridge Island – About 1.5-2.5 hours via SR 518 west, SR 509 north, and the Seattle-Bainbridge Ferry
      • Everett – 1-2 hours via SR 518 east and I-5 north
      • San Juan Island – 4-5 hours via SR 518 east, I-5 north, SR 20 west, and the Anacortes-Friday Harbor Ferry
      • Blaine/U.S.-Canada Border – 2.5-3.5 hours via SR 518 east and I-5 north
      • Snoqualmie – 1-1.5 hours via SR 518 east, I-405 north, and I-90 east
      • Tacoma – 40-90 minutes via I-518 east and I-5 south
      • Mount Rainier National Park – 1.5-2.5 hours via SR 518 east, I-405 north, SR 169 south, and SR 410 east
      • Olympia – 1.5-2.5 hours via I-518 east and I-5 south
      • Forks/Olympic National Park – 3.5-5 hours via SR 518 east, I-5 north, SR 104 west (including the Edmonds-Kingston Ferry), and US 101 north
      • Seabrook – 3-4 hours via SR 518 east, I-5 south, SR 8 west, SR 12 west, and US 101 north

Inclement weather and heavy traffic can affect travel times, so use GPS or your favorite navigation app for real-time updates and road conditions. In addition, the Washington State Department of Transportation has its own WSDOT app available for download onto Apple and Android devices. If you’re driving into rural areas, cell service can be limited, so save and download directions before you start driving. And if you’re planning a trip to Snoqualmie, Mount Rainier, and/or other mountain communities, you may need snow tire chains to drive during the winter season.

Reach Seattle and More of Washington from SEA

      In and around Seattle:

      • Mount Rainier National Park – This park is home to the Cascades’ tallest stratovolcano and a wealth of alpine hiking trails, and there are two ski areas (Crystal Mountain and White Pass) nearby
      • Snoqualmie – Speaking of skiing, Snoqualmie Pass is a convenient pick for winter sports near Seattle, and it’s a great spot for mountain hikes during the warmer months
      • Olympia – Washington’s state capital is more than just a government town, but also one full of beautiful parks and green spaces, delectable farm-to-table restaurants, and crafty artisan creations
      • Forks/Olympic National Park – Come for the Twilight lore, and stay for real-life magic of Olympic National Park’s lush temperate rainforests, grand mountain peaks, and serene ocean beaches
